The seminar took place at the Virology Laboratory of the Tajik Research Institute of Preventive Medicine, Dushanbe, Tajikistan, on June 11 to 15, 2018. Six specialists from various medical and veterinary labs received a course entitled “Principles, Practices & Interpretation of Molecular Diagnosis of EDPs for Trainers”.
The course was a follow up of the successful “train the trainers” seminars carried out by Project 53 during the last year, in which EU Team of Experts would train the persons in charge of carrying out trainings in their respective countries. Project 53 is implemented by the International Science and Technology Centre (ISTC) as part of the EU CBRN Centers of Excellence initiative, financed by the European Union.
The course included topics such as handling of genetic material, experiment controls, solution stock management, PCR method, and laboratory technology, control of contamination and use of equipment and supplies. Practical training was held with the use of interactive learning methods. The focus was on the relationship of new material with the existing knowledge and experience.
Practical sessions were held over 3 days (for each group) in the laboratory and were built to simulate the practical skills of laboratory diagnosis by PCR (secure working algorithms) under the supervision and constant monitoring by experts.
In the final part of the practical training, the trainers together with trainees held a final session in the form of questions and answers, during which they discussed the errors made in the course of analysis. Participants learned how to work correctly with PCR, understood the importance of strict adherence to all stages of the PCR process, learned how to record the results of the study, have mastered their basic PCR reading skills analysis, learned how to properly record, log, fill in protocols, writing down each step in the protocol.
