Multiple partner of EU funded Project 53 (P53) of the EU Chemical Biological Radiological and Nuclear risk mitigation Centres of Excellence Initiative (EU CBRN CoE) participated in the Regional Workshop for Central Asian States Parties to the Biological Weapons Convention (BWC) on Scientific and Practical Implementation Issues, 23-24 October 2018, Almaty. The meeting was hosted by the governments of Kazakhstan, the Federal Republic of Germany and the BWC Implementation Support Unit.
The workshop was conducted at the Central Reference Laboratory (CRL) of the M. Aikimbayev Kazakh Scientific Center for Quarantine and Zoonotic Diseases (KSCQZD). Over 30 experts participated in the meeting from Germany, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan as well as from international organisations: the Organization for Security and Co-operation in Europe (OSCE), the 1540 Committee Group of Experts, International Science and Technology Center (ISTC) and VERTIC.
During the meeting various P53 partners made presentations on the legislative work achieved under the project. Presentations were provided by: Ms. M. Andreyeva (Kazakhstan), Dr. N. Usenbaev (Kyrgyzstan), Dr. A. Sufiev (Tajikistan), Dr. S. Drobysz (VERTIC) and Dr. H. Visser (ISTC). The meeting enabled to increase the awareness of the activities conducted under P53 and the EU CBRN Centres of Excellence Initiative in the region, as well as, allowed to stimulate cooperation between P53 partner countries and with attending international organisations.
