As a Member of the United Nations, Mongolia ratified the ‘Cartagena Protocol on Biosafety’ in 1972 and ratified the Biological Weapons Convention, and founded the National Biosafety Committee (hereinafter ‘NBC’). The NBC has been operating under the Ministry of Nature, Environment and Tourism, but still necessary to reduce the risk of biological contingency threats, prevention, preparedness, and post-disaster management issues, It is necessary to strengthen the national legal environment to address complex issues, to strengthen the capacity of institutions and human resources, and to tighten controls.
The NBC is working with the CBRN CoE initiative regional project 53 funded by the European Union and implemented by the ISTC, to improve the legal environment for biosafety and biosafety in Mongolia from January 2017.
The P53 PIU in cooperation with NBC started to organize the Training-workshop on "Biosafety and biosecurity" for government and non-governmental organizations since April 2018.
The P53 Mongolia PIU organized the Third Training-seminar on "Biosafety and biosecurity" for officers of Ministry of Environment and Tourism on 9 June 2018 at “Mongolian-Kuwait” National Concervation Center. Minister of Environment and Tourism Mr Namsrai Tserenbat opened workshop. A total number of participants 80 and 60 officers of MET were trained and certified. The training program consists of theoretical practical understanding on Biosafety, biosecurity understanding, Laboratory biosafety and biosecurity; Human, livestock, zoonotic related infectious diseases, infectious agent biohazard level, Bioterrorism and bioethical issues and CBRN risk mitigation. The training-seminar was organized successfully and PIU, officers from MET, P53 project trainers and project experts were actively involved.
